A six week course in hand and machine sewing. Ages 8+ (Grown ups welcome too, or sew and learn together with your child).
We will start with hand sewing basic stitches and progress to more difficult ones according to ability. Children will work on this over the first few weeks in between the machine sewing to produce a sampler, which will be incorporated into a sewing kit to keep.
Getting to know the sewing machine and how to thread it, along with some safety instruction will get us started with machine sewing. Each child will first be supervised on a child friendly super safe machine and monitored for correct hand placement before moving on to the larger full-size machines (although the risk of injury is minimal and minor, it can still hurt if fingers get in the wrong place).
Once everyone is up and running, there will be lots of practicing straight lines and starting and stopping. Then we will be onto pivoting for sharp corners and working around gradual curves plus everything in between and then reverse stitching to secure ends.
We'll move on to a little pin cushion project (to match our sewing kit) to practice our new sewing skills as well as using a small pattern to learn some cutting out tips. If time allows, we will also make a Tic Tac Toe bag game.
The course will culminate in making our cute and useful apron (girl's or boy's style). We will use a proper printed pattern and learn the basics of how to read one, pin onto the fabric and cut out. Then we will apply all our previously learnt sewing skills to produce our lovely aprons.
Children may bring their own machines if they have them and they are suitable, or we have a number of machines available here to use. They may have to take turns on the machines, especially if supervision is required but we will have hand sewing and other things to do whilst waiting.
The Fibre Loft offers guaranteed finished projects with free extra time offered to children if required or alternatively finished for them if necessary.
Cost
In Person:
$40 per session or $280 for the whole course ($35 Ă— 8 sessions)
Virtual is not available for this course.
You will also need fabric for the apron. The Fibre Loft offers choices of fabric at $35. (A supply list can also be provided)
All other fabric (for smaller projects) plus notions and use of sewing machine are included in the course price. Refreshments and treats are also included.
